Friend Penn

Since I live in Pennsylvania, I found this book fascinating as well as a good resource for teaching my students Pennsylvania’s history. This book highlights the life of William Penn. William Penn’s father was a rich successful man in England.

Teddy’s Tornado was written about a little boy named Teddy. Teddy lives in Georgia and it often rains in the winter time. Teddy likes the rain, but today is different. His teacher is worried about the clouds in the sky, and his Mom is home from work when he gets home from school. It keeps raining and raining. Their neighbor, Mrs. Helen, tells them to come to her brick home because it’s safer.

Too Many Tamales

For those of you poor souls who have never tasted tamales, they kinda taste like a wetter cornbread with meat in the middle and wrapped in corn husks. Seriously, if you have never had the privilege of putting a tamale in your mouth, you need to remedy that immediately. Your taste buds will thank you! In this story, Maria helps her mother and father make tamales for their Christmas dinner.

Born to Die

Born to Die is a book that was written about the Anabaptist movement in Switzerland in the 1520s. This book features eighteen-year old Annabelle Friesen. The Anabaptist faith is sweeping through her village, it’s affecting her close friends, her boyfriend and her own family.

One Candle

Holidays are for celebrating, but sometimes Holidays are a time to remember the past too. In this story, Grandmother and Aunt Rose tell the story of celebrating Hanukkah in a concentration camp during the Holocaust.

Waiting

As usual, the illustrations in this book are absolutely marvelous! The colors are soft and the portrayal of the characters is detailed and gorgeous. The storyline is rather different from the other Kevin Henkes books that I’ve read.

Having read Three Cups of Tea, I was fascinated when I was given this book for the library. This book is about Greg Mortenson and how he changed the lives of a remote village in Pakistan. Mortenson was trekking high in the mountains of Pakistan.

The Wonders of Creations Series was published with Christians schools in mind. In fact, I actually ordered my set from Christian Light. This set is made to appeal to all ages with its colorful illustrations as well as more in dept research.
