The Stars of Summer: It’s summer, so Gladys can’t wait to cook all day and try so many new recipes. Unfortunately, her parents have other ideas. Charissa gave Gladys a free coupon for summer camp to Gladys for her birthday. Gladys’ parents are thrilled!
While I enjoyed reading "Shakespeare's Scribe", it is not approved for the school library. This is a historical fiction book placed in the time of the Globe Theater
"Pick of the Litter" does a wonderful job of teaching the importance of honesty and courage. Unfortunately,
Teddy lives at the perfect place, FunJungle! FunJungle is the newest zoo meets amusement parks, and they have this sweet mascot, Harry the Hippo. Unfortunately Harry the Hippo’s disposition could be improved as he is grouchy and loves flinging mud, etc at guests.
"Danger on Panther Peak" is a gripping story that left me shaking with suspense. It involves bravery and courage. However
While "No Dogs Allowed!" is a decent story, I am not at all comfortable with the boy/girl relationships. They are made a very big deal and involve way too much touching.
I bought this book because it was written by Russell Hoban. Russell Hoban has written the Frances books and a few more children’s books. I enjoy the Frances series as do my students, so I was excited to see a more “young adult” book by Russell Hoban. I was rather disappointed as the book is in my opinion rather dark, dank and despairing.
Honestly, this series excited me since it involved good role models for girls. I first read Betsy’s River Adventure and enjoyed it. I started looking into the series and realized that it was a nice big series. I was so excited!! When I started reading the series however, the books sorely disappointed me.
"Something for Seymour" is a children's story book written from an Anabaptist perspective. It tells the story of a struggling man who is looked down on by the world and himself but befriended by a caring Christian family. The author attempts to portray the difference between his worth in the eyes of the world and his worth in the eyes of Christ.
"Against All Odds" tells of the beginning of YWAM's work in Brazil. Jim and Pam experience much hardship and poor living conditions as they work to establish a brand new ministry. Despite the challenges, and despite the fact that they are repeatedly told that Brazilian people will not go out as missionaries, they persevere.
Jesse Stuart is known as a wonderful teacher and author. His children's books are exceptionally well written and clean. Therefore, I was excited to read his autobiography. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed. Some of my disappointment came from the sinful culture of backwoods Kentucky.
This book tells the story of a girl and her grandfather who love to explore, imagine, and learn. In this story, they find an owl and nurse it back to health while learning about it.
While well written, "Amina's Voice" was disappointing. It appears that the author had several goals in writing this story: to promote Islam, to encourage the welcoming of Muslim people as neighbors, and to show what life is like in middle school.
Sarcasm, when used well, can by enjoyable. Unfortunately, this book takes it altogether too far. The sarcasm turns into disrespect and rudeness...toward siblings, classmates, and even toward authority.
"Summer of Suspense" is a very fitting title for a book that leaves the reader shaking. The author definitely had a few good ideas and attempted to form them into a story. However, it ended up being very far fetched.
