Title: Amish Frontier Series

Author: Rebecca Martin

Grade Level: 3&4th

The goal of the Amish Frontier Series is to present to the reader the very real challenges faced by the Amish throughout history as they tried to remain faithful to their beliefs. In order to do that, the author follows a fictional family through many actual Amish settlements, having them move very, very often. Because of the frequent moves, the stories do not feel totally realistic. However, they do give a clear picture of the struggles faced by the Amish in each location.

#2 The Treasure Hunt - This book follows the Yoders to Colorado and the area that was the sight of a couple gold rushes. The teenage son learns that following Christ and being content is more important than the riches offered by elusive gold.

#3 A Song for the King - This book follows the Yoders to Montana and addresses the challenges faced by German speaking people during World War 1.

#4 Paradise Valley - In order to abide by their convictions regarding schooling, the Yoders move again. This time they end up in Mexico. The challenges they face are of a different sort and include getting caught in the midst of a nation at turmoil with numerous encounters with the rebels and soldiers.

#5 Arrow in the Sky - Back in the United States, the Yoders are now in Arkansas. They discover that prejudice is still strong in the South and are not popular because of their stance on equality. They also experience the devastation of the Great Depression.

#6 Steamboat Rock - The Yoders have moved again and are now in Michigan. They discover what it looks like to work together as a church despite differences in opinion. They also begin to feel the effects of war as Elam is called off to CPS camp.

#7 Storm Song - Still set in Michigan, the Yoders continue to hear about the war and Elam continues in CPS camp. They also struggle to know how to handle the court order to put their children in public high school. Persecution is real, even if it looks different than in the Martyrs' Mirror.
