Title: My Family Divided

Author: Diane Guerrero with Erica Moroz

7&8th

This book follows the heart-breaking story of fourteen-year-old Diane Guerrero losing her parents to an ICE raid. ICE is the branch of the government that detains and deports undocumented people. Diane’s parents lived in the US for years, and Diane was born in the US. She grew up with hard-working parents who had left Columbia so that their children could receive a better education and have better opportunities. When Diane’s parents were deported, she was left to fend for herself. She lived with various friends while finishing high school. She would see her parents occasionally when she could travel to Columbia, but even today, her parents cannot visit her in the US. She eventually became an actress and starred in Orange Is the New Black and other shows.

The real, literal cost of deportation is a story that needs to be told. This story is needed. We all need to read stories like this, so we can be informed on this subject. For that reason, I was super disappointed with the writing of this book and the inappropriate content. I really wish that I could recommend this book because it talks firsthand about the sticky subject of immigration as well as mental health…
