Title: The True Confession of Charlotte Doyle

Author: Avi

Pages: 278

Grade Level: 7&8

This is an odd tale. Or as the heroine says unusual! This is the story of Charlotte Doyle. Charlotte was going to school in England. Her family moved back to America during the school year, so Charlotte was left in England to finish her school year. She was to sail home on the ill fate Seahawk.

Due to various reason, she is the only passenger on this merchant ship. At first, things seem just peachy. The captain is suave and handsome. The crew is surly and scruffy. As the Seahawk continues on its voyage, things start to sour. Guns start showing up among the crew. Odd faces appear in strange places.

One afternoon, Charlotte unknowingly forces a mutiny among the men and their captain. A man is shot and another is injured badly. Now, Charlotte realizes just how brutal and terrible the captain is. Charlotte makes the brave choice to join the crew, so that together they can free the ship from the tyranny of the captain. Can Charlotte survive this harrowing journey?

Truly, an odd and unusual tale. This book takes on a fresh, usual look into history. It’s not particularly a pretty chapter in history, but it is part of history none the less. It’s a rather dark book as there is quite a bit of violence in this story. Other than that, it’s a fascinating book that sure to keep your attention. It’s not particularly appropriate for a school library.
