Refugee
Title: Refugee
Author: Alan Gratz
High School/Adult
This book follows three different refugees throughout different eras. Josef, a Jewish boy living during the Nazi regime, Isabel, a young girl caught in Fido Castrel’s Cuba, and Mahmoud, a Syrian boy fleeing the violence in Allepo, together create a mesmerizing, interlocking story. As I read, I found myself feeling profoundly grateful for all the things I have like my home, my job and my family.
This book is absolutely amazing, and I would recommend it but carefully. This would be an excellent book to use as a book reading group with a parent and child. The reading level would be a 7&8th grade level. The content pushed it up to a High School level. The author carefully addressed the hard issue, and it would be impossible to write a truthful book about this subject without hard things like violence, death, and separation.
