"Old Ben" is based on the author's own experiences of having a black snake for a pet when he was a boy. Go with Shan as he introduces Old Ben to his family and friends and ends up with a wonderful pet. Old Ben cares for the farm well, saving the family a lot of money by keeping the mice out of the corn crib. He even follows Shan around like a dog.
