Title: They Called Us Enemy

Author/Illustrator Team: George Takei, Justin Eisinger, Steven Scott & Harmony Becker

Grade Level: 7&8th

This graphic novel tells the story of George Takei and his family. They are a Japanese-American family who lived through World War II in America. During this time, the American government gathers up all the Americans who had Japanese roots or Japanese people who were living in America and took them to internment camps. They could only take what they could carry and lost most of their possessions, land, and money. In the camps, they lived in terrible conditions and lived in constant fear of the unknown future. This book clearly explains what happened and what it felt like to be a Japanese-American family. Please be aware that the author is part of the LGBTQ community.
