"The Little Black Hen" is an excellent first-grade book. It is written in a way that is easy to read, yet still has a story that is good enough for an adult to enjoy. Many of the words are one syllable, but those that have more than one syllable are divided to make it east for a new reader to understand. Enjoy reading about the pet and her sweet family.

If I (Rachel) may add a bit to this post. I used this book as a Read Aloud in Second Grade Reading groups. It was a huge success! My class is mostly boys this year, and they really enjoyed the story. The reading was easy enough, that we could start this book at the beginning of the year. Highly recommended!
