Where the Broken Heart Still Beats
Title: Where the Broken Heart Still Beats
Author: Carolyn Meyer
Grade Level: Adult
Stories of children captured and raised by Native Americans fascinate many. Often they are a gripping read. As expected, "Where the Broken Heart Still Beats" held my attention the whole way through. However, it was quite disappointing. It is possible to write about these situations while treating both sides with great respect. This book, however, painted the Native Americans in a very negative light. It is understandable that in the moment, the settlers would feel that negative. However, it is unnecessary to use such negativity while writing. This is definitely not a children's book. If you as an adult decide to read about such incidents, there are much better, more respectful books out there.
